This small building dates to 1909 and was built for the Slovenic-American Printing Company. They published the Slovenic language Amerikanski-Slovenic newspaper in this building from 1909 to at least 1913. By 1911 this was the second largest newspaper in the Joliet area with a circulation of above 5,700 copies per issue. It primarily served the Slovenic-American population Joliet, which was about 15,000 in 1911. At the time Joliet had a total population of about 35,000. The paper also had over 140 corespondents spread across the country. As well ads having subscribers across the U.S., it also had some subscribers in Central Europe.

This was the third location for the newspaper in Joliet. The paper moved from Tower Minnesota to Joliet in 1899 and had been published in Chicago before that. I'm not sure, but it seems the paper moved back to Chicago at some point.

xIt's a little hard to see the logo and date because of the flag pole and shadows, but there there they are!

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
