This original YMCA building constructed in 1927 was a five-story brick and stone structure around an open courtyard/light well. The Women's Division, the slightly taller section in this photo, was added on the south end of the original building in 1949. The YMCA moved out in 1989. Currently it offers affordable rental apartments for senior citizens. This looks like a huge building, but there is a large ground level courtyard in the center that is open to the sky.

xYou can see the YMCA name above the entrance on Ottawa Street.

xIt's a little hard to read, but the cornerstone reads Joliet YMCA 1927.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
