According to a 2025 real estate listing, this 1860 building started out as the home of a silver plating business. The Peoples Bank moved into this little white and brick building at Center and 2nd in 1919. The bank was organized February 1, 1893 with J.N. McElvain as the president. The bank operated until the great depression of 1930s. After the crash a locally-owned butcher shop purchased the building and used the safe as a meal locker. In 1959 the Girard Gazette newspaper moved into the building.

xThe name of the bank can be seen at the top of the building.

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
