An Interpretive Silhouette, Wayside Exhibit and a cool little Route 66 planter stand at the corner of Macoupin and Pine.

xThis Wayside Exhibit is titled "Heart of Coal Country", it relates a bit of the history of the coal mines opened to fuel the locomotives of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in the 1860s when "Waves of European Immigrants" settled in the area to work in the mines.

xThe Interpretive Silhouette depicts a coal miner carrying a pick on his shoulder.

xThere a couple of these cool Route 66 planters in Gillespie, this one points out that you only have 1783 miles left to go to get to Los Angeles!

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
