The base of 1919 Doughboy Monument that was originally located by the Dippold Drug Store is now located next to the Fire Department and Civic Center and serves as a monument to Vetersns lost in multiple wars. The Doughboy is gone and has been replaced by an Eagle. Just below the Eagle the stone is engraved to read:

"Dedicated to the
Soldiers and Sailors
of Gillespie
who gave their lives
for democracy."

The Doughboy may be gone, but the Eagle is proudly standing guard!

xThe additional slanted marker at the base of the monument lists the names of local Veterans who perished in World war I, World War II and Vietnam.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
