There is a small Memorial Park located next to the 1902 Bank Building
on Governor Oglesby Street. The Doughboy soldier on the monument has moved
around Elkhart over the years. When he first arrived in 1919 as a gift
from returning WWI soldiers he was stood in the middle of the intersection
of Governor Oglesby and Bogardus Streets about a half block from where
he stands now. In 1924 he moved to the lawn of the new high school where
he was joined by a captured German WWI canon in 1926. Today he proudly
stands in this little Memorial Park on Governor Oglesby St.
In the early 1900's J.T. Taylor had a general store and drug store
on this site.
