The Wabash Hotel building was was built in the 1839 and has had a number of names over the years including Heskett's Tavern, Edwardsville Hotel, Marshall House and the Wabash Hotel,

At some point during the Marshall House years of 1856 to 1871 Abraham Lincoln was reportedly a hotel guest. The Wabash Hotel name came about when the Wabash Railroad arrived in Edwardsville in 1871.

The building has been converted to apartments but one exterior wall has been left showing the original brick. There is only a small balcony on the front now but there used to be one that spanned the full length of the building.

xThere used to be three entrances on the front of this building. In 2016 the only way into the building was on the back facing away from the street. It's long gone, but there was originally a second portion of the building that served as an entertainment hall behind the main structure.

This brick building was built more or less immediately after a fire destroyed a wood framed hotel on this site. That earlier hotel was the second hotel to be built in Edwardsville.

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
