The 1892 Jacob Hoehn building served as a saloon, bank, theater, grocery store, offices and more over the 130+ years it has stood on this corner.

The 1892 Hoehn building replaced a smaller one story building on this site. The main floor glassed in corner space was apparently a saloon or restaurant owned by Hoehn. By the late 1890s it was home to a bank. The rest of the building was used for offices or apartments. For some time ending in 1920 the building was home the Majestic Theatre.

After that it became home to the U-Save-IT grocery and then a few years later a Kroger Grocery store. In the mid-40s it became home to a gift shop and by 1951 it was the Idle Hour Billiards Hall. The Idle Hour hung around until at least the mid 1960s.

During all of those changes the second floor continued serving as office and apartment space. When we snapped the photo on this page the building was a law office.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
