1920s/30s Gas Station

213 S. Old Route 66, Dwight, IL
Phone:

East < GO > West

I don't know for sure what this little building was, but in 2016 it was loaded with cool stuff out front. The sports car is labeled as a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. The 2012/13 Route 66 in Illinois IDOT survey estimates the building is from the 1920s or 30s and may have been gas station. The survey photos show that at least as far back as 1994 the building featured vintage gas pumps and related signs. The small round sign on the door is for the Model T Ford Club of America, perhaps the building occupants were members.

Unfortunately the vintage Shell gas pumps and other petroliana and phone booth have been removed, but the Ferrari painting was still there in the fall of 2023.

Talk about a time capsule, when is the last time you saw an outdoor phone booth?

Here's a closer look at the young lady preparing to use the phone.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
