The original 1926 to mid-1940s alignment of Route 66 continued south from the intersection of Morehead and Hwy. 24. According to the sign below, the 16 foot wide road was paved as part of the "Good Roads Movement". There is a handy paved pullout a few feet west of the start of the abandoned roadbed.

This sign invites you to take a stroll down this piece of historic pavement. This stretch of abandoned 66 runs for about a mile before it reached a the point where it would hook up with the newer alignment.

There is also a "66 Roadside Attraction" sign here. These signs were part of an effort by the city in 2022 to enhance the Mother Road travelers experience in Chenoa in advance of the Centenial of Route 66 in 2026.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
