East < GO > West

The owners of the Meramec Caverns near Sullivan, Missouri would paint barns along major roads for free if they could put a large sign on the barn to advertise the caverns. This barn, also known as the Cayuga Barn, is about 280 miles northeast of the caverns.

There is a sign on old 66 just south of the Wolf Creek bridge for the pullout and parking area which is located on the right of the road just after you cross the creek. This provides a handy place to stop and take a photo of the barn which is about 600 feet from the road. The turn off takes you on to the abandoned south bound lanes of the 1940's four lane alignment of 66. The former north bound lanes now carry traffic going both directions

This is an easy landmark to miss when traveling south (west on 66). If you get to the grain elevators on the east side of the road at Cayuga, turn around and go back a short distance to the pullout.

x There is a Route 66 Attraction sign at the pullout parking viewing area for the barn.

Barns signs for the caverns could be found in several states including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Arkansas. Federal laws passed in the late 1960's made advertising along highways more difficult and that mean that there are fewer and fewer of these signs left as time passes. It is hard, if not impossible to replace them once they come down.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
