This is home to the oldest county fair in Illinois but it has only been
in this location since 1951. The first fair took place in the Carlinville
public square in 1852 and the fair was been held in several locations
until 1929. Because of the great depression there was no fair in until
1938. The 1954 grandstand was razed and the current Grandstand was built
in time for the 2003 fair.
It is on IL-4 (Route 66) just on the north side of town.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
