You can easily miss the Sycamore Inn Steakhouse because it sets back from the road a bit and is partially hidden by the trees, look for the sign below.

It originally was William Rubottom's Mountain View Inn, a stop for the Butterfield Overland Company. After a fire, in 1920 John Klusman built the current building with hotel rooms on the second floor. In 1939 Irl Hinricksen purchased it, closed the upper floors and named it Sycamore Inn. The Inn acquired new owners again in 2002 and is open daily for supper.

It is located on what was originally the Santa Fe Trail at the intersection of Foothill Blvd. and San Bernardino Rd. in an area known as Bear Gulch. The Bear Gulch name comes from the early days when Spanish explorers encountered the relatively friendly local bears that roamed the area. The original Spanish version was "Arroyo Los Osos". I think the bears are long gone, but who knows for sure.

x The sign is lit with both neon and incandescent lights.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
