J.W. Burden's Store and Post Office was built in 1926 using red bricks that were painted beige. They sold Red Crown gasoline, which was Standard Oil brand at the time. It is the oldest remaining building along this historic stretch of Route 66. The Burden Store is about 7 miles west of the Two 66 Sixes Co. sign in Hodge.

The previous store at this location was built in 1924 and owned by the Postmaster Walter Trickey, but it burned down in 1926 shortly after J. W. Burden bought it. The old store was quickly replaced by this one. The restrooms were added when indoor plumbing became the norm.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
