East < GO > West

Just west of the Roadrunner's Retreat you can spot a stretch of public art on the north side of the road. Folks have used rocks from the surrounding desert to emblazon their names an the side of the road here. The rocks were placed on berms that were used as levees. When it rains in the desert, it floods and the berms funneled the floodwater away from the road and into the washes.

This is the desert, so you might want to look carefully before sticking your hands under a rock or even in the brush, you never know what kind of critter might be resting there. Maybe wear leather gloves just to be a bit safer.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
