Roadrunner Retreat & Cafe

Route 66, Chambless, CA
Phone: x

East < GO > West

The Roadrunner's Retreat Restaurant and Station still stand just a couple miles west of Chambless. They opened in the early 1960s and served classic road food.

xThe restaurant closed in 1995 but before that it had been dressed up as the "Expressway Diner" for a roll in a TV commercial for the 1986 Dodge Daytona automobile.

GPS: 34.561181, -115.574043

xNext to the cafe was a Standard Oil gas station.

x A giant headless Roadrunner adorns the top of the sign. The now missing head was hinged so it turned in the wind. The small signs on each post say "Fountain" and "East Amboy". The lettering on the Road Runner Retreat and Restaurant was neon lit. The legs neon on the bird were lit in sequence so it looked like the road runner was running. Well what else would he be doing?

The small sign on the ;pwer right in this photo says " East Amboy" a name that was in use for this location in the 1970s at least.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
