Cactus Motel

The Cactus Motel was originally built and owned by MD "Ike" Eichler, a building contractor. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Luchsinger purchased the motel early 1963. Unlike many of these vintage motels, this one was still operating with its original name in 2019.

The late 1940s motel featured Panel-Ray heat and Beauty Rest mattresses. The motel office on the right in this photo was a later addition to the property, as was the swimming pool directly behind it.

xThe very cool early 1950s neon sign was still standing tall in 2019. Take away the "Free Internet" and "Budget Rates" and it's the 1950s again! This sign replaced the original much less interesting sign. The yellow sign can was a later addition.

A nicely furnished 13 unit motel. Some fully equipped kitchenettes. TV, Individually controlled heat, and air-conditioning. Restaurant and shopping nearby.

Note: It's interesting that the mid-60s postcard doesn't mention a swimming pool. I would have thought the pool would have been added by then.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
