Opening night at the Azusa Foothill Drive-in Theater was December 18, 1961. The opening night double feature movies movies were Walt Disney's "Babes in Toyland" starring Ray Bolger, Tommy Sands, Annette Funicello, Ed Wynn and the children's movie "Misty" starring David Ladd. Children 7 to 12 enjoyed a special admission price on opening night of only 25 cents.

The theater operated for just a few days more than forty years. The last night was December 28, 2001 with a double feature showing “Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone” and “Ocean’s Eleven”,

The sign is located at the intersection of Route 66 (Foothill Blvd.) and Alosta Ave.
GPS: 34.133596, -117.897792

The sign is all that remains of the theater that once had space for just over 1,500 cars. The theater property now belongs to the Azusa Pacific College, but the sign has been preserved as a requirement of the sale to the college. A complete restoration of the sign took two years and cost an estimated $50,000.00. A relighting ceremony for the sign took place on Oct 8, 2007 with about 300 people gathered for the event.

The college built a parking lot behind the sign that resembles the parking pattern of the old theater. This may have been the last operating drive-in on Route 66 in California.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
