This neat Art Deco building was built in 1929 for the Arcadia News/Journal newspapers. The entrance and canopy above it on the left in this photo was originally just a window that matched the other two on the first floor. There was originally a narrow neon sign, maybe twice as tall as the second floor windows, above the main entrance canopy. As close as I can tell from a blurry old photo, it said "Arcadia" arched across the top and "JOURNAL" vertically under that. The building underwent some restoration about 2004 or so. It was occupied by a funeral home when we went by in 2019.

xThe tower features neat Art Deco styling.

xThe relief sculptures were designed by J.J. Mora.

xThere's a small plaque on the front of the building noting it's historic status. The build date doesn't match a January 03, 1930 article in the South Pasadena Foothill Review which talks about hundreds of people attending the formal Open House for the new Arcadia News building at this address on the previous Saturday, that would have been December 28, 1929.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
