Valentine School for non-Indians

Valentine Way, Valentine, AZ

East < GO > West

It looks like school is out, for good at this little wood frame one room school house. This was where non-Indians in the area went to school. The teachers who taught here lived in the basement. Unless some preservation happens soon it's hard to believe this little building can hold out much longer on it's own. The larger brick Indian school is a short bit farther west on 66.

This little old schoolhouse stands on the corner of Valentine Way and what was the 1926 alignment of Route 66. Coming from the east the old dirt road crossed under the railroad tracks using the same culvert and joined the current paved road. The school site was bypassed when the road was realigned and paved in 1937,

xTo get to the school turn left shortly after going past Keeper of the Wild Nature Park and go under the railroad tracks. The school house will be on the right just after you go under the tracks. There is no sign for the turn off from 66, but if you miss it you can cross the tracks at the next intersection, turn left and then left again and backtrack to the school on Valentine Way.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
