Built in the late 1960's, the Fort Courage Trading Post is located at I-40, exit 348. It was based on the 1960s TV series "F Troop" which only ran from 1965 to 1967, plus reruns of course.. In early 2020 fire damaged some of the Fort.

x The "Fort" is next to the trading post. This place can bring back fun memories for those of us old enough to remember watching the show. The road the Fort fronts is just a frontage road. The old Route 66 is buried under the freeway.

xHere's a closer look at the water tank and the soldier standing guard.

xThis little builing stands in front of Fort Courage near the road.

x The sign is easily seen from I-40 on the east side of exit 348.

x The 1967 building located next door to the trading post was originally built as a Van De Kamps Holland Dutch Bakery / Coffee Shop. It is one of only two still standing, the other is the Denny's Restaurant in Arcadia, CA. The Denny's still has the large windmill on top. It's unclear if this building ever had a windmill, but I'm guessing it did. In it's later years it became home to the Pancake House Restaurant, In also has been Ortego's Taco Restaurant and before that it.

x The Armco gas station in the background was boarded when we took this photo in the spring of 2012. The station had formerly been a Chevron station.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
