Western Motel (Former)

East < GO > West

Route 66 Self Storage occupies the former the Western Motel. The motel dates back at least to the 1950s. It was built and owned and managed by Ed & Mae Burton with 21 units separated by garages. Later it was owned by Ed and his son Bob Burton. Over the years it was expanded to 26 guest rooms. But it's been remodeled to be almost beyond recognition as the original. One of the later signs for the Western Motel is now at the Butterfield Steakhouse.

This image is cropped from another postcard from the mid-50s. It gives a little better look at the sign with its neon lettering and steel frames arrow that appears to have incandescent lights. I'm guessing the lights on the arrow "chased" the outline of the arrow as it pointed in towards the motel. This is probobly the second of at least three signs that beckoned travelers on the Mother Road to pull in and spend the night.

NOTE: In the first postcard you can see the garages for each unit. The car in the second postcard is a 1958 Cadillac. Radiant floor heating in the guest rooms was probably a luxury when the motel was built.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
