Dick Mester had managed the original Campbell's Coffee House before WWII. In the early 1940's the coffee shop moved about a half block from it's location on Navajo Blvd. to this building on the SE corner of Hopi Ave. and Navajo Blvd.

Sometime after the mid-fifties this location became Mester's Automat Cafeteria. Which was promoted as the "First eating establishment of this kind in Arizona". In an Automat Cafeteria the food was served from vending machines. For many years it was also a Greyhound bus depot. They continued to operate the bus depot after closing the restaurant. Dick's wife Gladys retired in the early 1990s.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
