The visitor center is located in the 1936 Officer's Quarters building. It is the first building you come to when you enter the fort property. But once you turn into the fort it is about 1.5 miles north to the visitor center. The building was restored and opened to the public in 2005.

Fort Reno has been around since 1874 and served as a fort until 1909 when it became a Army Quartermaster Remount Station raising and training horses for the military. In 1949 the Fort was converted into Department of Agriculture Experimental Station.

A couple of famous visitors to the Fort were the aviator Amelia Earhart and the humorist Will Rogers. Earhart flew an autogiro, sort of an early helicopter, here sometime in the 1920s and Rogers attended polo matches and horse races here.

Fort Reno is located a few miles west of El Reno on old Route 66.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
