Route 66, El Reno, OK

These first two murals are on the bridge abutments where Route 66 (Sunset
Drive) passes under the Rock Island railroad tracks between Miles and
Ellison Avenues. The mural above depicts three American classic cars
from the 50's and 60's. The mural is titled "Small Town Weekend"
which is a community event that takes place in El Reno on the first
Friday and Saturday of June each year. The signature on the mural reads
Chris Small.
This mural shows a Union Pacific and Rock Island locomotives flanking
a steam engine With the title "Building America - 150 Years"
The signature on this mural also reads Chris Small.
This mural on Woodson at Rock Island Avenue reads "Welcome to Historic
Downtown El Reno". You can still catch a ride on the trolley through
downtown El Reno by visiting the Historical
Museum. The small car parked in front of this huge mural gives some
idea of it's size. Painted by Dr. Bob Palmer and/or his students from
Oklahoma City in 2001.
This is the El Reno Heritage Mural at the corner of Bickford and Woodson,
next to the Heroes Plaza. Each of the nine panel illustrates a point
in the history of El Reno's, Canadian County and western Oklahoma in
general. From left to right the panels depict the Cheyenne-Araphano
Reservation, the Darlington Indian Agency, Ft Reno, the Rock Island
Railroad, El Reno, the Original Oklahoma Land Rush, the Caddo Springs
Station, Jesse Chisholm Trail, and Francisco Coronado.
The mural was commissioned in April of 1980 by Oklahoma Federal Savings
and Loan Association which was painted by Charles Beecham and completed
in 1980.
The mural on the back wall of the Heroes Plaza pays tribute to the men
and women who have served with honor in our military forces. I think
this was painted by Charles Beecham who designed the Heroes Plaza on
the other side of the wall.
This mural is on the wall next to the small parking lot at Elm and
Choctaw.
