Touch the Clouds (1838-1905) was a Minneconjou Teton Lakota (Souix) chief in the late 1800a and very early 1900s whose native name was Mahpiya Icahtagya. In 1877 he went to Washington DC as a delegate to meet then President Hayes.

This bronze sculpture of Chief Touch the Clouds was installed here only a few weeks before we saw it, so there was still a bit of landscaping left to finish up and it looks like a plaque is yet to arrive also. Located at the entrance to the University of Central Oklahoma on Second Street, just west of Garland Godfrey Drive on the 1926 - 1954 alignment of Route 66.

x The head dress flowing down the Chief's back is almost as impressive as the front of the sculpture. Unfortunately there is no handy place to park within about a block so most folks will only ever see this magnificent statue from the front. The statue is 18 feet tall and 15 feet wide and weighs just over 20,000 pounds. The sculpture was created by the late artist Dave McGary. The statue had previously stood at the Houston Astrodome since 1998.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
