Route 66 Park
9901 NW 23rd St., OKC (Bethany), OK
Phone:
To get to this park from the Lake Overholser bridge follow Lake Overholser
Drive around the lake to the park. The road runs between the lake and
the park on the west side of the lake so it's easy to find. (This park
is actually in OKC which wraps around Bethany. So you get to the park
by driving through Bethany and then into OKC again.)
The Cyrus Avery Pavilion, across the road from Lake Overholser, houses
a observation deck and restrooms. This is a pretty large park, but there
is parking right in front of the pavilion.
The plaza in front of the Avery Pavilion contains a map of Route 66
from the shores of Lake Michigan to Santa Monica. Images of iconic locations
along the way are embedded in the plaza.
Andy Payne who was from Foyil Oklahoma ran in and won the Bunion Derby
from Los Angeles to New York and is memorialized in the park with this
statue. The actual name of the race was the "International Trans-Continental
Foot Race" from Los Angeles to New York.
The
park entrance is about a block west of Lake Overholser Drive on 23rd,
this sign marks the entrance to the park.
