The El Rancho Motel was built in 1937 and operated for 50 years before closing in 1987 shortly after which the furnishings were auctioned off. When new it could accommodate 250 guests. In 1988 Armond Ortega purchased the hotel and set about restoring and reopening it while reacquiring what he could of the furnishings. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

x Many of the rooms are named for the movie stars that stayed at the hotel. We stayed in the Lucille Ball Room, shown here.

x The hotel lobby is amazing.

xThe sign is about as ornate as they get.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
