The New Mexico State Capitol was dedicated on December 8, 1966 and rededicated in 1992 after being renovated. Often referred to as the Roundhouse because of it's circular design it was built in the New Mexico Territorial style, an sort of mix of Greek revival and Pueblo adobe styles. The building and surrounding plazas form the Zia sun symbol.

The Zia sun symbol is inlaid in the floor of the atrium.

The walls of the capital are lined with some really wonderful works of art owned by or on loan to the the Capitol Art Foundation which was established by the New Mexico legislature in 1991. The collection features contemporary works by artists who live and work in New Mexico. Take a little time to enjoy these cool works of art.

xLook up and checkout the wonderful skylight in the rotunda of the capitol.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
