The former Santa Fe Desert Inn opened in late 1957 and was built and owned by Clyde and Goldie Tyler. Gene Garrett bought the motel in 1973 after which it became Garret's Desert Inn, The Garret family owned and operated the motel until 2015. The 83 unit motel also had a restaurant, heated swimming pool, and playground. The guest units were equipped with dressing rooms and tile baths, telephones and televisions. The motel became part of the Master Hosts Motor Hotels in January of 1958, making it the first member of the group in Santa Fe.

The 1959/60 AAA Tour Book tells us that you could rent a room for the night here for between $8. and 19.00 and that "most rooms" have a TV. The 1965 Master Hosts directory lists the daily rates at between $9. and 35.00.

We stayed here in 2015 when it was still known as Garret's Desert Inn because it is about a two-minute walk from the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
