Capilla de Santa Rita de Cascia

43# (?) County Rd. B26A , Bernal, NM

East < GO > West

The 1850 Capilla (Chapel) de Santa Rita de Cascia church stands beside what became the 1926 to 1937 alignment of Route 66.

The 7131 foot high Bernal Hill, also known as Starvation Peak, can be seen in the background. .Bernal Hill served as a landmark for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. I'll let the postcard below give a look into how the mountain came to be called Starvation Peak.

xThe bell is located next to the church, the rope to ring it is hanging in the upper left corn of the "window".

xThe Capillo Santa Rita de Cascia cemetery next to the church.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
