You know all those MERAMEC CAVERNS signs you've seen along Route 66, well you made it, this is the place! Lester Dill opened Meramec Caverns in 1933 and it soon became a tourist trap, offering tours of his cave. He also had a restaurant and souvenir shop inside the cave and a motel outside.

To advertise, he offered to paint barns for farmers, free, if he could advertise Meramec Caverns.

There are a whole boatload of options for recreation on the river including kayak and canoe rentals, floating and a riverboat ride.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
