Opperman Saddle and Harness Shop1034 Military Ave., Baxter Springs, KSPhone: ![]()
Mr. Opperman came to Baxter Springs in 1871 and started his business on this site. Under his and his son's after him the business operated here until 1924. The original building is still here but is hidden behind the current facade. Notice the seals and depository on the wall and the burglar alarm sign. There is a cool looking neon sign with what appears to have been a clock at the bottom. The lettering was too far gone to read though, but the sign has been restored since this photo was snapped. There is a historic marker for this building, but for some reason it was by the door on the old Baxter Bank building next door when we snapped these photos in 2016.
J. P. Opperman served as mayor of Baxter Springs from
1883 to 1890. Upon retirement, Opperman turned the business over to
his son, Charles Opperman, who ran the shop until it closed in 1924,
bringing to an end one of the last vestiges of the original cowtown.

Did
You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
