American Bank

1201 Military Ave., Baxter Springs, KS
Phone:

East < GO > West

The American National Bank built a 2-story building here in 1917. In 1953 the American National Bank and Baxter National Bank merged and became the American Bank at this location.

The bas relief tile mural by Texas artist Paula Collins depicts the city's history. She used terra-cotta clay and sculpted the scenes in individual tiles that were fired and then fitted together. Look for the Route 66 Shield tiles.

The Historic Marker near the entrance on Military talks about 1868 Brewster House Hotel that occupied this site before the bank.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
