David & Grade Aldrich constructed the historic Octagon House in 1867. It is a private residence and one of an estimated 36 octagon houses in Illinois, and the only one in Will County. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune it was designed by Orson Squire Fowler, who reportedly considered eight sides superior for increasing sunlight and ventilation.

It is located several blocks, about 4/10 of a mile, south of 66 on Water St.

William Johnston acquired the house in about 1910 and it stayed in his family until at least 2022. His great granddaughter, Gayle Schutten, lived in the house until her passing 2022.

In January 2010 the Octagon House was designated a historic landmark by the Will County Historic Preservation Commission. Gayle was presented a plaque in May 2010 which hangs by her front door.

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
