The Eagle Hotel complex was built in three sections between 1837 and 1843 and is the oldest commercial building in Wilmington. The section on the left is the oldest and was built about 1837. The center section, on the corner, was the last section constructed and was built in 1843. The original Inn was built in 1838 is shown on the right in this photo

The original Inn served as a Riverboat and Stagecoach stop. The 1843 section connected the hotel to the warehouse and included a main floor rental storefront as well as additional hotel guest rooms on the second floor. That main floor space was occupied by the First National Bank of Wilmington for two short years from 1863 to 1865.

x Sometime in the late 1940s the hotel was converted to apartments. The main floor of the corner section continued as retail space until 1982 when the Wilmington Area Historical Society acquired the building. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
