The tomb of President Abraham Lincoln is located in Springfield and is well worth a visit. There is no admission fee, but no photos are allowed inside the tomb. The memorial was completed and dedicated in 1874. The president, his wife, Mary and three of their four sons are interred here. The tomb was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

x Lincoln's Tomb is located at the Oak Ridge Cemetery on Grand and Monument Avenues. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1955.

xA countless number of visitors have rubbed Honest Abe's nose and given it a highly polished shine in the process. It's almost too tempting to refrain from joining them ... will you?

The foundation for the tomb was laid in 1969 and the superstructure was completed in 1871 at a cost of $180,000.00. In 1901 it was rebuilt at a cost of $100,000.00 and in 1931 an appropriation of $175,000.00 was voted to rebuild the structure. The Obelik rise 117 feet above the sidewalk and the base of the structure is seventy feet square and fifteen feet high.

NOTE: It's interesting that the location of Lincoln's tomb isn't mentioned on either side of this postcard beyond saying "Springfield, Ill" on the front.

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
