It's easy to zip right past the White Fence Farm Restaurant on Joliet Road, so keep an eye open for the white fence. They have been serving happy diners since the 1920's. It's famous for their chicken and other dinner delights.

xThe restaurant is only open late afternoon and evening hours Tuesday through Saturday and from noon on Sunday, they are closed on Monday. The hours are shown prominently on the front of the building.

xChicken is not only featured on the menu but this huge rooster stands out front near the entry.

xThe Wayside Exhibit located here is "Good Eating on Route 66, The White Fence Farm Story". In part that story includes Stuyvesant Peabody who was the president of the Peabody Coal Company at the time he opened the restaurant across the road from his horse farm. A few owners later Robert & Doris Hastert took over in 1954 and later their son, Robert, Jr. became the owner.

I'm not sure if this is an original sign for the restaurant that started out in what had been a farm house, but it looks like it could have been. The restaurant has apparently been added onto several times over the years. The "world's greatest chicken" is served family style and the restaurant can seat 1,000 customers in 11 dining rooms.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
