This is the third and last service station that John Stonecipher owned in Odell. It was his Mobil Station from 1955-1989. It is located on West St. between Tremont & Hamilton St. John Stonecipher was inducted into the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame in 1992. He had operated a Marathon/Phillips 66 station at another location in town beginning in 1948. After the earlier station burned down in 1955 he moved the business to this former welding shop on Route 66 in January of 1956.

xIn this photo a 1954 Chevrolet station wagon and a 1940 Chevrolet two door sedan stand along side the station. There was a 64 Chevelle and a 65 Buick Riviera inside the service bays. The gas price showing on the vintage pump by the corner was 40.9 cents a gallon. During Stoney's 41 years in the business he saw the price per gallon of gas go from $0.21 to $1.40. The red flying Pegasus adorns both the front and side of the building.

John Stonecipher was also a volunteer fireman for nearly two decades and drove a school bus for 15 years, both activities in Odell.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
