Old Route 66 Alignment

Just south of Mount Olive an older four lane alignment of Route 66 (the first bypass here) has been converted to a two lane highway. Part of the abandoned roadway still exists. This view is facing southwest, the newer alignment on the right joins here. About a quarter mile south of here is a railroad viaduct that required the road to squeeze 4 lanes together to get through it. It's a little less nerve wracking going under the bridge today with only one lane each way.

x Facing northeast from this intersection the older northbound lanes of the first bypass alignment is barricaded, and the pavement is pretty broken up. This is just one of several places along the Mother Road where this situation exists.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
