1926 Alignment @ Cemetery Hill

Cobblestone Ave. Lincoln, IL
Phone:

East < GO > West

Cobblestone Ave. is part of the original alignment of Route 66, this short section is still paved with brick (cobblestone?). Turn west off the 4 lane a Kenwood Drive and take an immediate left onto Cobblestone.

The brick paving ends at Broadwell Drive. Going straight across Broadwell takes you to the gated and fairly steep "Cemetery Hill" as the 1926 alignment as it approaches Salt Creek and a Ghost Bridge.

xThe old road is gated just past Broadwell, so it's a walk to the creek and ghost bridge. Looking at Google Maps that walk appears to be about 1/3 mile. The old road going down the hill gets pretty rough pretty quick, what you see here is the good part. As this photo shows, the gate was in bad shape when we were there, but it has been fixed.

There's another short dead end section of the 1926 alignment (1050 Ave.), on the other side of the Salt Creek, but the part that gets to the creek is also gated.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
