This museum was founded in 2008, it is located in the former City Hall at Hwy. 53/Route 66 and Cty. Rd 9000 (Kankakee Rd). In 2016 it was open on Mon, Wed, Fri 9-2

x The "Mining Black Diamonds: Braidwood's Coal Boom" Wayside Marker is located in front of the museum. The marker tells us that in 1864 Thomas Byron struck coal while digging a well and that the next year James Braidwood, a Scottish miner sank the first mine shaft. I guess that accounts for the subtitle "Braidwood's Coal Boom".

The marker also talks about the formation of the United Mine Workers Union in 1890 and a small bit about mining history in the area.

xThere is also an Interpretive Statue regarding coal mining in front of the museum.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
