Located in the Elkhart Cemetery is the stone Gothic Revival style Episcopalian St. John's Baptist Chapel. Built in 1890 this is the only privately owned chapel in Illinois.

Lamer Parke Gillett commissioned the chapel in memory of her late husband John Dean Gillett. The actual construction was done by the Culver Stone and Marble Company from Springfield, IL. The chapel holds a Hook and Hastings pipe organ built in Boston, MA. The chapel with its Tiffany style stained glass windows is available for weddings as well as memorial services.

x There is also a plaque at the main gate about the historic significance of this place. The Nina Lamer Gillett Memorial Gate erected in 1939 still stands at the entrance to the cemetery. The pillars on either side of the gate bear inscriptions about it.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
