This little building dates back to 1920s when Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Halley built it. It is located on Route 66 (Hwy. 157) & Chapman St., on the northeast side of Edwardsville.

In the early years the building was home to the Barnes Cash Market followed in 1924 by Superior Cash and Carry Market operated by Costa Coroniotis. In 1927 the Halley's opened their Halley's Cash Market in the building after they closed their downtown dairy business. The Halley store operated here until 1970.

Then it became home to Hazel's Re-Sell Shop for all kinds of household items. It housed the Springer's Creek Winery, now gone, in this 2017 photo. The building had been painted white by 2023.

When Route 66 came along in 1926 this was the first market early travelers on the Mother Road came to when they entered Edwardsville.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
