Here's something for the basketball fans traveling Route 66. Crest Hill honors a local boy who grew up to become a famous player of the sport. Located on the east side of Broadway in a small park at Ingalls Ave.& Broadway. The statue was dedicated June 2006.

x The Friends of Community Public Art commissioned this statue. The lead artist was David Standifer. It's a big statute at 7 feet 10 inches tall, a foot taller than Mikan himself. But that's fitting because he was bigger than life as a basketball player for DePaul University and later for the Minneapolis (MN) Lakers. He led the Lakers to five national championships. In 1996 he was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.

x His boyhood home is a few blocks north at 2001 Broadway St. in Crest Hill.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
