The "Million Dollar Courthouse" in Carlinville is quite a place
and the story behind the name is even more interesting. It took three
years to build and was completed in 1870 for $1,342,226.31 and took 40
years to pay off the bonds. There was also a scandal of misused funds.
It is one of the largest county courthouses in the United States.
The courtroom on the upper level is beautiful. Seeing this room is probably
worth the visit all by itself .
