East < GO > West

About 4.25 miles south of the Carlin Villa Motel there is a short section of the 1926 alignment called the Deerfield Loop. Turn right to get on this road and follow it back to IL-4. Watch for the Historic Route 66 directional sign as you approach from the north.

GPS: 39.225357, -89.813245

xJust after turning onto the Deerfield Drive you follow the road as it curves to the left and follow it as it winds a bit through the countryside. The two lane road is a bit rough, so drive slowly to avoid problems.

xAlong the way you'll cross this old bridge.

xThe loop is about about 4/10 of a mile long in all. The gravel road goes uphill a bit as you approach the newer road. When you get back to IL-4 you can turn right and keep on cruising, or cross the highway and follow the old road a very short distance to an abandoned 1920 concrete bridge. That makes a good photo opportunity.

The abandoned 1920 bridge is on the east side of IL-4. The bridge is blocked but is accessible from either end. Follow the old road a short distance to barricade.

This view of the bridge is from the south and you can see where the old road, the Deerfield Loop, crosses the newer road.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
