It's hard to even imagine the courage it took for Bruno Schustek to attempt this daring effort to save a strangers life. The marker stands on the edge of Schustek Pond on the property of the North American Spine Society a block or so north of the original alignment of Route 66.

xThe marker reads

"Bruno F. Schustek
Sept. 10, 1899 - July 6, 1930

Schustek Pond
In honor of Bruno F. Schustek, who gave his life attempting a daring midair rescue of parachutist Mary Fahrney, just northwest of this site, on July 6, 1930.

This pond was officially named Shustek Pond by the United States Board on Geographic Names on April 9, 2015".

xBruno Schustek had been a pilot in World War I. A newspaper article from the time identifies him as a professional parachutist.

xAs you approach the memorial on Veterans Blvd. it looks like you are turning into a parking lot, but according to Google maps you're not, the road apparently ends right at the memorial site. Stay left as seen in this photo.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
