The eight sided Atlanta Public Library was built in 1908 of white granite and has operated continuously since. It is located at the intersection of Arch & Race Streets.

The clock tower was added in the last 1970s. The 1909 Seth Thomas clock came from the tower of the Atlanta High School. Volunteers take turn each week to hand-wind the clock.

x The library is one of the few octagonal-shaped public libraries in Illinois. This view from the parking lot shows the multifaceted structure more clearly. A museum was located in the basement but has since moved to its own building at 112 SW Arch St. nest to the Palms Grill Cafe and right across the street from the Route 66 Park.

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
