The Spanish style Green Spot Motel started out in 1937 with 21 units separated by garages. In the early days there were reportedly many prominent Hollywood types as guests, including Herman J. Mankiewicz and John Houseman who wrote the first two drafts of the script of the film Citizen Kane here in 1940.

In the beginning the office and courtyard occupied the center of the U shaped building Eventually a swimming pool was added in the courtyard, but that is long gone now. The Green Spot Cafe across the street burned down in 1954.

xLike many such motels of the era the garages have been converted into guest rooms. That increased the room count to 41. The motel sits a half block off the original alignment of the Mother Road.

The opening of the freeway bypassing downtown in the late 1950s was bad news for the Green Spot. .

In 2001 the old sign came down and found it's way over to the California Route 66 Museum collection. There's nothing special about the current sign shown here.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
